Didgfest 2007

“The stunning musical talent of Central Australian didgeridoo artist Andrew Langford has become the catalyst for a world-acclaimed tourism venture in the heart of Alice Springs.”

Andrew Langford is widely recognised as one of Australia’s most exciting players.  At the “Sounds of Starlight Theatre” in Alice Springs, he thrills audiences from all over the world with a spectacular multi-media show that conjures up the landscapes of the desert.  So popular are his didgeridoo performances and master classes that he is in demand to tour overseas and he has made a number of appearances in Europe.

Andrew traveled extensively throughout the Northern Territory for the first six years, working as a horticultural adviser on cattle stations and Aboriginal communities, and it was through these links that his love affair with the didgeridoo began.  He worked closely with traditional Aboriginal people who gave him all the tips and hands-on encouragement he needed to perfect his skills in playing the instrument.

He began his career as a land manager but developed into an expert an Aboriginal culture and music.  He has played the didgeridoo with leading Aboriginal elders, including Bobby Burrungurr and Raymond Ashley and recorded with Sammy Butcher of the famous Aboriginal Warrumpi Band.

He has accompanied John Williams, the internationally renowned classical guitarist, Tim Wheater, the British flautist, formerly of Eurythmics and the Japanese pianist, Kenado Hannada.  The performance with Hannada took place at Kakadu National Park and was broadcast live to a television audience of 17 million people.  At another outdoor concert at Simpson’s Gap in Central Australia, Andrew joined the Darwin Symphony Orchestra to enhance the composition “Earth Cry”.

In Andrew’s hands, however, the didgeridoo is not an ethnic curiosity but a fully-fledged member of the modern orchestra that can mix with other instruments and make music of many styles. In 1996 Andrew opened his own venue “The Sounds of Starlight Theatre” in Alice Springs, Northern Territory.  At the theatre Andrew Langford performs three to five nights a week as the feature artist in the ‘Sounds of Starlight Theatre Show’ alongside other supporting musicians providing an exotic bed of percussion and audio soundscapes.  The show has now been running successfully for over ten years and has earned the reputation of the “must see” show whilst in Alice Springs for over 6,000 attendees per year.

Andrew has performed at festivals in Australia, including the Melbourne Didgeridoo and Queensland “Laura Didge” festivals.  For the Womad Train Festival, he traveled by train from Adelaide to Perth, playing along the way with such artists as Remmy Ongala from Tanzania, the “Bauls” of Bengal and the throat singers of Tuva, Russia.
